We are very excited to announce the latest addition to our arsenal of glass: 4 lens set of Kowa Prominar Anamorphic vintage lenses.

These 2X squeeze lenses are the highly sought-after Japanese cinema lenses of the 1970's. They've been completely re-furbished and re-housed and are ready to turn your images into 2.39:1 cinemascope goodness. Low in contrast and warm in color, the flare is warm rather than the standard blue anamorphic flare. Their size makes them work well on steadicam as well as handheld.

The set consists of :

  • 40mm T2.3
  • 50mm T2.3
  • 75mm T2.8
  • 100mm T3.4

Keep in mind that Anamorphic mode is currently enabled on the Alexa Studio with its 4:3 sensor, RedOne-MX, and Epic in 5k mode only. For other Epic resolutions (2K, etc.) and for shooting Anamorphic on Scarlet you'll need to do a little work-around.

Contact us to schedule a test at our office if you'd like to try them out.

The perfect combination : Alexa XT Plus, Alexa Mini & KOWA Anamorphic VINTAGE lenses

The recent trend to the increased use of digital cameras has generated a new interest in anamorphic vintage lenses. As with film, grain is not an issue anymore, but some are considering images created with digital cameras too clean, effectively lacking the organic quality of film grain. To add a bit of 'organic character', the use of anamorphic lenses has again gained in popularity. Expand your creativity combining the only digital camera that can capture a full anamorphic image with our new Kowas Anamorphic vintage lenses.
Kowa 2x anamorphic

Why anamorphic?

Filmmakers and audiences alike have grown up with the uniquely cinematic anamorphic look and associate it with the emotional impact of big-screen movies.

The sheer width and clarity of the format, its shallow depth of field, the way it handles out of focus backgrounds and flares, all of these have been burned into the subconscious of cinema-goers for over half a century.

The Alexa XT Plus and Alexa Mini are uniquely positioned to allow the use of anamorphic lenses through their 4:3 format sensors, which capture the whole image projected by anamorphic lenses. They deliver 33% more resolution with anamorphic lenses compared to digital cameras with 1.78 sensors.

Highlights

  • Twice the resolution of 2.4:1 Super 35.
  • Unique look is painterly, impressionistic, magical and dreamlike.
  • Shallow depth of field in one plane.
  • Vertically streched, out-of-focus backgrounds.
  • Anamorphic bokeh - Oval, out-of-focus highlights.

Alexa De-squeeze

Anamorphic de-squeeze shows a properly de-squeezed image (with or without surround view) on the EVF-1 and/or MON OUT when working with anamorphic lenses. To learn more about anamorphic and how it works, download Anamorphic De-squeeze White Paper PDF from the technical documentation of this product.
